Pesky Starlings

Starlings get a lot of good press when they perform their miraculous synchronised flying displays in winter skies. But what doesn’t get mentioned is that those huge flocks of Starlings need somewhere to roost and a good source of food. All too often that is provided by a friendly dairy farmer.

Starlings, you see, have cottoned on to the fact that it is much easier to live on a dairy farm and steal cow feed than it is to go out and forage for feed for yourself. This is a real nuisance as they are noisy and dirty when they descend in large numbers.

To deter the birds from stealing all the yummy food from our cows we use Starling scarers and fly hawks to scare them away. It is only a temporary cure but it does seem to work, for a while at least.

John is our Head of Dairy Operations, responsible for making cheese and generally keeping the dairy and staff organised. Having worked with us for what he decribes as “ten backbreaking years”, John says what he loves most about his job is making cheese using the traditional methods. When he’s finished work for the day John can be found motorbiking, enjoying time by the sea with his family or drinking lager! His favourite Brue product is our Vintage Cheddar.
